Speech Pathologists assist patients with impaired communication skills to regain those skills or to learn alternative means to express their needs or feelings. They help the patient improve their social skills.
A speech-language pathologist:
- Maximizes the communication of the patient
- Educates alternative forms of communication if there is a speech deficiency
- Educates patient’s family members on various tools of communication
- Evaluates swallowing capability
- Educates patient on diet if patient has dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing)
- Evaluates if patient has a voice disorder
- Evaluates if patient has cognitive issues (i.e. has a recent stroke and unable to communicate or follow commands)
